The Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH or Department), California’s civil rights agency. The Department takes in, investigates, conciliates, mediates and prosecutes violations under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Disabled Persons Act, Unruh Civil Rights Act and Ralph Civil Rights Act. The DFEH has six California offices in Elk Grove (Headquarters), Bakersfield, Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Jose.
The DFEH welcomes partnerships with California colleges and universities. The Department established its first two partnerships as of May 2011. The first is the DFEH-UC Irvine School of Law Civil Rights Clinic. The second is the DFEH-UC Davis School of Law Employment Discrimination Law Program. Sixteen law students from the two partnerships were given the hands-on responsibility of cllassifying 1,000 claims in in Dept. Fair Empl. & Hous. v. Verizon (Seales) (Super. Ct. L.A. County, 2010, No. BC444066), the Department's historic $6 million class action settlement the California Family Rights Act (CFRA). California State University, Bakersfield, will be the third DFEH partnership in August 2011, to train public policy graduate students to investigate employment discrimination complaints.
